Climb Up the Steel Mountain Published by Black Rose Writing
This is an original fictional medical novel by Len Steiner that was published by Black Rose Writing on November 6, 2014. It concerns a young man's hard struggle to overcome all obstacles to become a prominent cardiac physician. He is forced to move from Cleveland, Ohio to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at a young age and is confronted by an abusive alcoholic stepfather. At fifteen, he punches out his stepfather to stop him from abusing his mother. He finishes high school in Leetsdale, PA. and enrolls in the pre-med program at The University of Pittsburgh. He meets an old girlfriend from high school and she gets pregnant with his child unknown to him. He finds out later that she was killed in an automobile accident. He works his way through university and a benefactor finally helps him get through medical school. His goal is to do heart transplants and later does two of them successfully. He loses his best friend and stepfather. Also his son from his eventual marriage to a pretty surgical nurse. He loses his mother after performing bypass surgery on her against his better judgment. He completes voluntary duty in Vietnam and suffers the killing of his African-American colleague by enemy troops and gets injured himself. He suffers PTSD later and gets jailed for drunkenness in New Orleans. "Climb Up the Steel Mountain" keeps the reader interested as there is always action, whether it be the doctor's problems, that of his patients, or his immediate family. The book is based on real people and real places and is excellent reading for all ages. The book should remind readers of "Arrowsmith" by Sinclair Lewis but it is completely different.
(Amazon Reviews: "Very well researched, makes you remember all those formative years. It is real life. It brings back memories of the Pittsburgh area and Cleveland area, all locations of my childhood and formative years. It really is a good book." Rated Five Stars ***** by Virginia Ellen Nelson, Former Resident of Leetsdale, PA. now lives in Dallas, TX.
"Very well written and a great story line. I would recommend to everyone that they should buy this book." Also rated Five Stars ***** by Carole Damico, Former Resident of Conneaut, OH. who now lives in Lorain, OH. Check out the rest of the reviews on Amazon.com.
A review by Askdavid.com states, "Climb Up the Steel Mountain is a fictional medical novel that all ages should read because it relates the struggle of a young man that faces insurmountable obstacles in his quest to become a prominent cardiac surgeon. It offers drama, excitement, tragedy, love, happiness, war, and even an important lesson for all readers to learn. The novel was inspired by the author's life and those of many of his close friends but is fictionalized to include the tenderness of physical love and the extreme tragedy of the main character, Louis Stafford Jr. This book will appeal to all ages and education from young adults through seniors of both sexes. Look for it in major book stores. It should be a best seller."
